Quad City Mallards News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Brandon Coccimiglio scored twice and Levente Szuper made 40 saves as the host Missouri Mavericks defeated the Quad City Mallards 6-3 Saturday night.

The Mavericks took control by scoring five straight goals, including three in a span of five minutes and fifty-nine seconds early in the second period. Just 68 seconds into the second, Dale Mahovsky finished off an odd-man rush to give Missouri a 3-1 lead. Andrew Courtney and Coccimiglio then provided goals four and five for the Mavericks in a one minute and eighteen second stretch. After the fifth Missouri goal at 7:07 of the second, David Brown replaced starting goaltender David McKee in the Quad City net. The Mallards finally halted the Missouri outburst when Eric Giosa scored his second goal of the night- shorthanded- from point blank range with just five seconds left in the second.

At 9:54 of the third period, Coccimiglio ripped his second goal home from the left wing circle to stretch the Maverick advantage to 6-3. Brandon Marino banked the puck in off Szuper at 13:32 of the third to make it 6-3, but that goal made no impact on the result.

It was Giosa who had given the Mallards a 1-0 lead by burying John Snowden's cross-crease pass just under two minutes into the game, but the Mavericks would even the score at one when Mike Wakita started the Missouri onslaught with a drive from the left point at 3:39 of the first period. At 13:20, Sebastien Thinel jammed the puck in from the side of the net to give the Mavericks a lead they would not relinquish.

The Mallards return home to meet the Mavericks tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. The Mallards' first Genesis Family Skate of the season will immediately follow tomorrow's game- fans can bring their skates and join the Mallards on the ice.
