Komets Avenge Friday Loss with 4-2 Win Against Gems
January 7, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Gems professional hockey team, proud member of the the "AA" Central Hockey League, would take an early lead but would be unable to bounce back with the surging Komets posting three straight unanswered goals in the second half of the game to claim the 4-2 win on Cassano's Italian Ice inside the historic Hara Arena on Saturday night.
Continuing their momentum from Friday night's 3-2 win, the Gems would score first at 13:20 of the opening frame, thanks to the hard work of Nick Fanto's 11th goal of the season before the Komets answered three minutes later to skate into the first intermission tied 1-1. Shots on goal in the period, however, favored Fort Wayne 22-11 through twenty minutes.
Dayton again started the offense in the second period, with Damian Surma taking his time to snipe a snapshot past Komets netminder Nick Boucher at the 6:17 mark, Surma's team leading 18th goal of the season assisted by Brett Lutes on the powerplay. Despite their chances, that would be the final goal of the night for Dayton, with Fort Wayne coming back for two back to back goals in just over a minute to end the frame ahead of the Gems 3-2 after forty minutes of play. The Komets again edged the Gems in shots in the middle stanza 13-5.
A shorthanded Komets goal off the stick of Fort Wayne native Kaleigh Schrock would seal the 4-2 final at 11:16 in the third period, with the Komets earning their fifth win of the season over the Gems. Final shots tally went in the visitor's favor 46-22 after sixty minutes. Both teams notched powerplay goals, with the Gems going 1-6 and the Komets 1-7.
With the loss, the Gems record falls to 12-14-6 (30pts) while the Komets improve to a conference best 21-9-1.
Both teams conclude the weekend series back in Fort Wayne for a Sunday afternoon matinee at 5pm.
The Kettering Medical Center is the official presenting sponsor of the Dayton Gems.
