Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (January 23)- It wasn't an easy two points, but Scott Sheppard and the Texas Brahmas earned a hard fought overtime 4-3 victory in Amarillo Friday night.
Former Brahma forward Mark Carragher stuck it to his former team in the first and second period with a pair of goals to put the Gorillas up 2-0 going into the final period. But the division leading Brahmas were not going down easy as All Star defenseman Justin Kinnunen started the scoring for Texas six minutes in the final period. Jason Deitsch followed up the goal with his sixth of the season at the 9:26 mark. With a 2-2 tie, Brahmas goaltender David Cacciola was tested with 15 shots in the third and working on earning his seventh victory of the year.
As time dwindled down, Texas defenseman Kevin McLeod gave the purple and black their first lead of the game, giving the Brahmas an opportunity to shut down the Gorillas for a win. Amarillo pulled their netminder Mike Gorman for an extra attacker, and it paid off when Michael Handza slid a shot past Cacciola in the crease with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
In their second consecutive overtime game, the Brahmas were looking for a better outcome, and found it when team leading goal scorer Scott Sheppard found the back of the net on a powerplay due to a Gorillas too many men call. Texas went 1 for 8 on the powerplay.
The Brahmas and Gorillas will go head to head once again tomorrow night in Amarillo at 7:05 PM. On Sunday Texas returns to home to the NYTEX Sports Centre for an afternoon game against Southeast divisional rival, Rio Grande Valley. Faceoff is set for 3:05 PM.
