(POMONA, NY) -The Rockland Boulders impressive month of June was rewarded on Thursday as two players earned Can-Am League honors for the first full month of the season. Joe Maloney was named the Rawlings Player of the Month while Richard Salazar earned Pitcher of the Month honors, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Maloney opened the year on a torrid pace and has continued his performance into the heat of the summer. In 25 games, the catcher/outfielder batted .300 with two home runs and 13 runs batted in, helping the Boulders (23-14) to the top of the Can-Am League standings. The slugger also blasted nine doubles and stole five bases while racking up a .346 on-base percentage. In his second season with Rockland, Maloney is tops in the league with 29 while sitting second in the league with a .359 batting average and home runs with five.
Undefeated through his first six starts of the season, Salazar (6-1) posted a perfect 4-0 mark in five starts during the month of June, compiling a 3.16 earned run average. In 31.1 innings of work, the lefty struck out 24 batters, walked just nine, and held opposing hitters to a .238 batting average. Another league leader, Salazar leads the league with six wins, ranks fourth in the Can-Am in ERA (2.74), and is second with 42 strikeouts.
The defending Can-Am League champions, the Rockland Boulders wrap up a five-game home stand when they host the Garden State Grays over Independence Day Weekend. Rockland will welcome in the Grays on both Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 for the first meetings between the two teams.
