New York Boulders News Release

RAMAPO, New York - Jon Velasquez tossed his third straight quality start at Provident Bank Park to help the Rockland Boulders defeat the Pittsfield Colonials Thursday night by a score of 7-6 in Can-Am League action.

Velasquez pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits while striking out six Colonial batters. In three consecutive starts at home, Velasquez has thrown 20 1/3 innings and has given up just eight runs.

The Boulders got on the board first on Thursday night, after Cristobal Santana walked to lead off the second and Scott Clement singled to put runners on the corners. Ryde Rodriguez hit a ground ball past the second baseman to plate Santana for the first run of the game.

Cole Kraft led off the third with a triple to deep right field that was just a few feet to the left of the short porch. Sean Smith then singled to bring Kraft in to increase the Rockland lead to two. The newly acquired Jeremy Slayden followed Smith with his first hit as a Boulder, an RBI double that brought Smith around to score from first. Still without an out in the inning, Ryan Mollica smacked a single into right field to score another run for Rockland.

The inning continued for the Boulders with Scott Clement being hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Rodriguez struck out, Joe Hage doubled down the left field line to bring in two more Rockland runs and give the Boulders a 6-0 advantage after three frames.

Billy Mottram provided the first two runs for the Colonials in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run into the short porch in right field.

The Boulders quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with a hit, a walk and an error. Clement then took ball four with no place to go to bring another Boulder run home and give Rockland a 7-2 lead.

Pittsfield got a run back in the top of the seventh on a Rafael Cabreja double with Peter Fatse standing on second base. The Colonials loaded the bases later in the inning after a Kraft error loaded the bases, but he quickly made up for it, turning a double play on the next pitch to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the eighth, a passed ball allowed Johnny Welch to score from third to bring Pittsfield within three. Brett Carroll then came into the game, and gave up a two-run home run to Fatse on his first pitch to cut the Boulder lead to one.

Adrian Martin came in and pitched a perfect ninth inning to help Rockland hold on and earn his league leading 11th save of the season.

The Boulders (19-25) will play the Colonials in game two of the three game series Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Will Hassett (2-4) will take the mound for the first time as a Boulder Friday night. He will take on Pittsfield's Chad Paronto (3-4).
