July 14, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Cameron Monger had a grand slam as part of a five-run Worcester rally in the third. The Tornadoes defeated the New York Federals 13-1 on Park & Recreation Day Thursday afternoon.
Zach Zuercher picked up his seventh win of the season (7-3), going six innings. The southpaw ace allowed one walk, three hits and one run, while striking out three Federals batters. Mike Gedman threw two scoreless innings, and Ryan Lobban pitched in of his own (the ninth) in the Tornadoes' rout.
Alex Trezza hit the first of two Worcester homeruns in the first inning. The Tornadoes got two-out singles from Chris Colabello and Mark Minicozzi before Trezza's eighth homer of the year put them up 3-0. Worcester added another five runs in the third, including Monger's grand slam.
New York scored its only run in the second. Eddie Lantigua led the frame off with a single, advanced to second on Brad Jackson's hit and took third on a wild pitch. Derrick Pyles hit a grounder to shortstop Chase Fontaine, who bobbled the ball and allowed Pyles to reach. The Federals' outfielder was still credited with the RBI, since the play would have recorded the out at first, not retiring the baserunner.
The Tornadoes had a similar play in their half of the third, scoring the run before Monger's four-run shot. Minicozzi (who finished the day 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBI) hit a grounder to short, which Felix Adamkiewicz botched as Fontaine scored.
Worcester notched one run in the fourth, when Minicozzi's singled plated Abraham Nunez. (Shortly thereafter, Nunez left the game and was replaced by Tony Patane.)
A pair of errors by the New York shortstop led to two Tornadoes runs in the fifth. Worcester added a run in the sixth when Patane knocked Monger home with a single, and finished its scoring in the seventh with Ryan Crespi's fielder's choice.
Game two of the series is Friday night, as the Tornadoes host the Federals for game two of the three-game set at 7:05pm.
