New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals equaled a season high with four errors as the Brockton Rox won their eighth straight game, 12-7, on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
With two-time reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week James Leverton on the mound trying to extend his streak of 19 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings entering the night, Brockton jumped out to a 6-0 lead. With the help of a pair of first-inning errors, the Rox plated three runs (one earned) in the first inning to gain a 3-0 advantage. Brockton tacked on a trio of second-inning runs in the second to make it 6-0.
The Jackals broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when Leonard Davis led off with a double and scored on a Mike Jones sacrifice fly before Jones came plateward on a double to right off the bat of Jordan Newton to make it a 6-2 game. However, Brockton got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Shawn Williams to increase its lead to 7-2.
The Rox extended their lead in the seventh inning when they plated four runs, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Chris Valencia after a 15-pitch at bat. New Jersey fought back though as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh that scored Mike DeJesus and Davis. Then in the bottom of the eighth, they added on three more when Jordan Newton led off with his third home run of the season. Later, DeJesus drove in Chris Anderson and Argenis Reyes with single to cut the lead to 11-4.
Brockton closed the scoring in the top of the ninth when Williams scored on a double by Valencia. Williams and Valencia combined to go 7-for-9 with five RBIs.
Leverton (6-3) suffered the loss after pitching six innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on a season-high 10 hits. Mike Smith (5-4) worked through six innings and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five.
The Jackals and Rox continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends Jon Kibler (0-1, 6.30 ERA) to the mound for his third start of the season against Brockton's Dustin Birosak (4-0, 1.69 ERA) in a battle of left-handers. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
