Can-Am League Game Recaps
July 14, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Newark 6, Quebec 3
Newark's pair of home runs helped fuel the Bears to a 6-3 win against Quebec in game one of a three game series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Newark got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when center fielder Tim Raines Jr. hit a two-run homer, and the Bears scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning when first baseman Daryle Ward hit another two-run homer. Newark completed its scoring in the next frame when Ward batted in two more runs. Quebec scored in the eighth and ninth innings, but it wasn't enough to top Newark. Ward led Newark with two hits, one run and four RBI in four at-bats, and Raines chipped in two hits, three runs and two RBI in three at-bats. No Capitale had more than one hit in the game, and both designated hitter Pete Laforest and center fielder Goefrey Tomlinson registered one hit and one RBI for Quebec. Alex Smith, now 4-2 on the season, earned the win by allowing one hit, two runs and striking out four in 7.2 innings pitched.
Rockland 7, Pittsfield 6
Rockland scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 7-6 win against Pittsfield at Provident Bank Park. The Boulders got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when right fielder Ryde Rodriguez singled to bat in first baseman Cristobal Santana. Rockland had six hits and five runs in the next frame to take a 6-0 lead against Pittsfield, and center fielder Sean Smith scored the last and final run for Rockland in the fourth. The Colonials scored two runs in the top of the fourth and added four more during the seventh and eighth inning, but their late-game rally was not enough to beat Rockland. Smith had two of Rockland's nine total hits, and eight different Boulders recorded at least one hit in the game. Second baseman Peter Fatse led Pittsfield with two hits, two runs and two RBI in four at-bats. Jonathan Velasquez, now 3-3 on the season, earned the win by allowing four hits, three runs and striking out six in 6.1 innings pitched.
Brockton 12, New Jersey 7
Brockton got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in each of the first and second innings, and the Rox never looked back as they topped New Jersey 12-7 at Yogi Berra Stadium. After the second inning, Brockton had a 6-0 lead against the Jackals before New Jersey scored its first two runs in the bottom of the fourth when designated hitter Mike Jones and left fielder Jordan Newton each batted in a run. Brockton scored the next five runs, extending its lead against New Jersey. The Jackals scored two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, but left a total of 10 on base during the game. In the top of the ninth inning, center fielder Chris Valencia knocked in the last and final run for Brockton. Valencia led Brockton with three hits, two runs and four RBI in five at-bats, and shortstop Mike DeJesus chipped in three hits, one run and two RBI for the Jackals. Mike Smith, now 5-4 on the season, earned the win by allowing six hits, two runs and striking out five in six innings pitched.
