Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Traverse City pounded out a season-high 18 hits but the Schaumburg Boomers took advantage of their opportunities to take the second straight slugfest over the Beach Bums 14-11 on Friday night at Boomers Stadium.

Rob Benedict started the game for Traverse City with a double and ended up scoring from third when Greg Harisis was caught in a rundown between first and second. However, Schaumburg responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame on two hits, two sacrifice bunts, two walks, a sacrifice fly and an error.

As has been the case in the entire series, the wackiness was just getting started. With runners at second and third and two outs in the third inning, Josh Miller hit a bouncer up the middle that second baseman Jordan Dean threw away, allowing two runs to score. After a walk, Scott Woodward tied the game with an RBI single and then scored along with Chris Cowell on a Benedict two-run double to push Traverse City ahead at 6-4.

Tyler Sciacca led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer off Rusty Shellhorn to start a string of 10 consecutive runs scored by the Boomers. Two doubles and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning put the Boomers back on top 7-6. In the fifth inning, Schaumburg loaded the bases with two away and forced Shellhorn from the game.

Scott Vachon entered and walked in a run before ceding three straight run-scoring singles that plated five runs and opened the Schaumburg advantage to 13-6. Two Traverse City errors in the sixth inning gave the Boomers another run, making it 14-6.

The Beach Bums had some late life in their bats, scoring five runs over their last two at-bats. Yazy Arbelo blasted a three-run homer to straightaway center field in the eighth to draw TC to within 14-9. Arbelo's dinger was his 13th of the year and his third straight contest with a home run.

In the ninth, Benedict coaxed a two-out walk and scored on a Harisis double before Arbelo plated a run with a single to make it 14-11. With the tying run in the on deck circle, Ross Spurgeon struck out Jose Vargas to finish the game.

Four Beach Bums finished with three hit nights: Benedict (3-for-5, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI), Arbelo (3-for-6, HR, R, 4 RBI), Vargas (3-for-5, R), and Woodward (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI). Harisis (2-for-5, R, RBI) and Sean Gusrang (2-for-3, R) also had multi-hit affairs.

Shellhorn (4-2) suffered his second straight loss for Traverse City, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on six hits and five walks in 4.2 innings. Danny Jimenez (5-3) started and picked up the win for Schaumburg while giving up six runs (one earned) on 10 hits in five frames.

Despite plating 21 runs on 33 hits in the first two games of the series, Traverse City will look to salvage the finale of the three-game set on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Tanner Tripp (1-4, 5.06) will start for the Beach Bums with the Boomers counteingr with Seth Webster (3-2, 3.17). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
