Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored seven runs in the first four innings, leading from the first inning on in winning their eleventh consecutive series at Rent One Park with a 9-6 victory over the Washington Wild Things on Saturday, taking the series two games to one.
In the first, the Miners drew three walks to load the bases with one out against Washington starter Shawn Blackwell (7-3) before Marquis Riley drove home the first run on a sacrifice fly. Aaron Gates followed with a two-run single to make the score 3-0 Miners.
After Blackwell and Rick Teasley (7-1) got through a scoreless second frame, Chris Burke slammed a 1-0 pitch well over the fence in left for a solo home run to make it 4-0. After Washington scratched across two runs in the top of the fourth, the Miners would answer with three of their own in the bottom half on an RBI double by Ryan Cavan, an RBI single by Niko Vasquez, his first as a Miner, and another RBI double by Riley.
Cavan grounded into a double play in the sixth, bringing home Tyler Booth for another run. Washington would score two in the seventh to make it 8-4, but the Miners would answer with another run-scoring double by Cavan in the eighth to make it 9-4. Washington added two more in the ninth for the final margin in the back-and-forth contest.
Five Miners had multiple hits in the game, led by Vasquez's 3-for-5 game, with four players in the order scoring two runs as well. Cavan finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs, while Riley finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Teasley pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs for his team-leading seventh win of the season, as the Miners gained a game in the standings on the first-place Wild Things. They continue their nine-game homestand on Sunday at 5:05 p.m., welcoming the Florence Freedom to Rent One Park for a three-game series. Miguel Ramirez will start the opener for the Miners against Florence's Michael O'Neal.
