Washington's Late Rally Falls Short in 9-6 Loss to Miners

July 26, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

Marion, IL-Despite putting together a late-inning rally, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, were unable to pull off a win on Saturday, July 26, falling to the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 9-6. Rick Teasley took the win for the Miners while Washington starter Shawn Blackwell took the rubber match loss.

After being held to just two runs against Washington the previous night, Southern Illinois jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with the help of a sacrifice fly by left fielder Marquis Riley and a two-run single by right fielder Aaron Gates. The Miners lead was stretched to four runs in the bottom of the third when first baseman Chris Burke launched his ninth homer of the season to put Washington behind 4-0.

The Wild Things answered in the top of the fourth inning when second baseman Garrett Rau smacked a double down the line to score catcher Jim Vahalik and center fielder Daniel Poma.

Unfortunately for Washington, however, the Miners matched those two runs and added to their lead in their next at bats to make it 7-2 after four complete innings. Southern Illinois's three runs in the fourth were credited to the bats of Riley, shortstop Ryan Cavan and third baseman Niko Vasquez.

Southern Illinois plated another run in the bottom of the sixth when center fielder Tyler Booth came across to score on a double play ball, putting Washington behind 8-2. The Wild Things retaliated with two runs in the seventh inning when third baseman Carter Bell plated right fielder Scott Kalamar with an RBI single and later scored on a bases loaded walk.

After Cavan extended the Miners lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the eighth with his second RBI double of the night, Washington took to their last at bats with a sense of urgency. A triple by shortstop Ryan Kresky plated pinch hitter Jose Dore and began what looked like an Wild Things comeback. Second baseman Sam Montgomery followed with an RBI double that put the Wild Things within three. The comeback was cut short, however, when Southern Illinois thwarted Poma's plans to extend the rally, giving the rubber match victory to the Miners by a final of 9-6.

The Wild Things will stay on the road for the next two days as they travel to take on the second place Evansville Otters beginning Sunday, July 27. This upcoming matchup proves to be a pivotal two-game series, as the Otters sit just 1.5 games behind Washington in the East Division. First pitch for Sunday's contest is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM and/or follow live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.
