Bonk's Late Charge Just Shy of Condor Comeback

March 29, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

FRESNO, Calif., - Dave Bonk's two power play goals brought the Bakersfield Condors within a goal with 40 seconds remaining, but a three goal first period by the Fresno Falcons proved too steep to overcome in the Condors' 3-2 loss at the Save Mart Center.

Matt O'Dette put a wrist shot on Ryan Munce off of a faceoff win by Brett Hammond midway through the first period. O'Dette's shot was blocked by Munce, who made the save off his left toe. The rebound bounced to Rob McFeeters, who flicked the puck under the crossbar to give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Fraser Clair made it 2-0 Fresno after receiving a centering feed from Derek Krestanovich in the corner. Clair set up in front of Munce and pushed his shot through the goaltender's legs to double the Falcons lead.

On a lead pass from Shawn Weiman on the left wing, John Wrobleski fired a wrist shot on the Bakersfield net. The puck skipped off the upper part of Munce's blocker to extend Fresno's lead to 3-0. Following the goal, Munce was replaced in the Condors goal by Marty Magers, who stopped each of the shots he faced at the end of the first period.

Munce returned to the net to open the second period and stopped all four Fresno shots faced, several of which came through traffic.

On a five-on-three power play, Dave Bonk rifled a shot through the legs of a defenseman along the near goal line. Holden made the save, but Bonk recovered his own rebound and finished the effort. Mike Hofstrand and Kevin Truelson assisted on the play as the Condors cut the Fresno lead to 3-1.

With Ryan Munce pulled and Vince Macri in the penalty box following a cross-checking infraction, the Condors held a 6-on-4 advantage, and Dave Bonk capitalized by deflecting a Kevin Truelson wrist shot from the point. Bonk tapped the puck from the slot past Holden to bring Bakersfield within a goal and making the score 3-2 with just 40 seconds remaining.

Munce was pulled again for the extra skater just eight seconds later, but the Falcons would hold off the late attack to hand the Condors the loss.

Jamie Holden earned the victory with 35 saves on 37 Condor shots. Ryan Munce was credited with the loss despite making 23 saves on 26 shots faced. Marty Magers stopped the lone shot he faced in the first period.

Other notes: Kevin St. Jacques' assist on the second Bonk goal was career point number 996, just four shy of his 1000th. The game was rescheduled from its original date of February 24th due to poor ice conditions. The attendance was 6,808.

For the record: The Condors drop to 34-25-6 on the season with 74 points on the year. Bakersfield trails Long Beach by five points for 2nd place in the Pacific Division with two games in hand.

Bakersfield returns home tomorrow night, March 29th to host the Utah Grizzlies on High School & Student ID Night presented by WB-TV 12 and the Big 96.5. Students presenting a valid school ID at the Arena box office can receive terrace admission for just $1
