Greenville Drive News Release
/GREENVILLE, SC - Right fielder Chris Turner's fourth hit of the night, a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning, capped a stunning rally as Greenville came from five runs down to edge the Hickory Crawdads, 9-8, on Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Bombers, now winners of three straight games, scored three times in the seventh inning, once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to take the series opener.
Turner, who is now 8-for-12 in his last 3 games with five RBI, singled off Crawdads closer Matt Capps (3-4) to finish the evening. Trailing 8-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, John Otness opened the frame with a ground single to left field. Andrew Pinckney reached on a fielder's choice for the first out.
Then the notoriously poor lighting at the aged ballpark became a factor. Claudio Arias lofted a fly ball into medium depth right field. Antonio Sucre lost the ball in the twilight sky and it fell ten feet to his right for a gift double, moving Pinckney to third base. Turner then snuck a ground ball past the dive of second basemen Dan Schwartzbauer into right field to score the tying and winning runs.
Greenville finished with 16 hits. Center fielder Jeff Corsaletti extended his hit streak to 13 games going 2-for-5 with three RBI, while first baseman Brett LeVier and Arias each doubled twice.
Hickory steadily built their lead thanks to designated hitter Anthony Bocchino, who doubled in the fourth inning and blasted a two-run homer in the fifth. The Crawdads touched Bombers spot starter Scott Shoemaker for three runs over three and one-third innings and Randy Newsom for five more runs in three innings.
But the newest member of the pitching staff was nearly flawless. Righthander Kevin Guyette (1-0), added to the Bombers roster yesterday as he was promoted from Lowell, fired two and two-third hitless, scoreless innings with five strikeouts to earn the win.
The clubs meet in game two of the four-game series on Monday at 7:05pm. Righthanders Jarrett Gardner (1-6) for Greenville and Matt Guillory (1-4) for Hickory will pitch.
