Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers Sunday afternoon 8-5 in ten innings at State Mutual Stadium in front of 2,838 fans.
The Braves got off to a rocky start to begin the game. In the first inning, Greensboro's Brian Cleveland hit a double through the hole at shortstop and scored on a J.T. Restko single. Brad McCann then doubled sending Restko to third, who would score on a Steve Gendron sacrifice fly, making the game 2-0.
The Grasshoppers would double their score in the second. Andrew Jenkins singled to center field, followed by a Trent D'Antonio double sending Jenkins to third. Gaston reached base on a throwing error allowing Jenkins and D'Antonio to score, extending Greensboro's lead 4-0.
Rome would cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second. Clint Sammons singled, advanced to second on an Ivan Terrazas ground out, and got to third on an Ardley Jansen single. Sammons scored on a Dean White single followed by an RBI single by JC Holt to drive in Jansen, allowing the Braves to tighten the score 4-3.
The Grasshoppers would add to their lead with a run in the top of the eighth. Rome would tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning 5-5. JC Holt had an RBI single and Yunel Escobar tripled on an 0-2 pitch with two outs sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth for Greensboro, Rome responded. Following a Sammons double and a Terrazas intentional walk, Jansen hit a bomb over the left field scoreboard giving the Braves the win, 8-5. It was Jansen's first home run of the season.
Michael Nix received his first win of the season (1-0) and Greensboro's Scott Nestor got the loss (2-3).
