Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Shortstop Brian Bocock put Lehigh Valley ahead with a two-run double in the fourth inning and then blasted a grand slam in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach as the IronPigs went on to take down the Indianapolis Indians 12-8 on Wednesday night at Victory Field.
The loss for Indianapolis drops their record to 50-49 on the season, while Lehigh Valley improves to 41-57 with the victory. The win for the IronPigs also improves their season record to 5-2 against the Tribe, with the two teams having split a four-game series in Lehigh Valley in early May.
With his six-RBI effort on the afternoon, Bocock has now collected nine RBI against the Indians over the first three games of the series and has a season-high nine game-hitting streak, during which time he is hitting .394 (13-for-33) with three home runs and 14 RBI.
Trailing 5-4 entering the eighth inning, the IronPigs rallied with four runs on three hits, two walks and a wild pitch. 3B Neil Sellers began the rally with a lead-off walk and, after a base hit by 1B Paul Hoover moved him to second, C Dane Sardinha laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Sellers and Hoover to second and third.
Then, after an Indians wild pitch allowed Sellers to score and an intentional walk put Bocock on first, International League All-Star 1B Andy Tracy came through with the key hit of the game, a clutch base knock that plated Sellers and gave Lehigh Valley the 6-5 lead. However, the IronPigs weren't finished in the frame as they tacked on two more tallies on a sacrifice fly by 2B Ozzie Chavez and a base hit by top prospect Domonic Brown to surge ahead by an 8-5 advantage.
The IronPigs also jumped out to a 3-1 advantage with a single run in the third and two more in the fourth. Former Tribe OF Chris Aguila put Lehigh Valley on the scoreboard when he blasted a two-out solo home run to left field for his second homer of the season, before Bocock continued to dominate the Tribe with his two-run double in the fourth inning.
With the Tribe down 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, SS Argenis Diaz lined a key single to center to set the stage for pinch hitter Jonathan Van Every, who launched the ball over the right field wall for the Indians first pinch hit longball of the season. The homer, which gave the Tribe a 5-4 advantage, was Van Every's fifth home run in his last seven games played and gave him seven round trippers on the season.
One frame earlier, right fielder Brandon Moss helped draw the Indians within striking distance when he blasted a clutch two-out longball for his team-leading 14th home run of the season. The homer for Moss also helped extend his hitting streak to 12 games during which time the Tribe outfielder is batting .377 (20-for-53) with 11 runs, four home runs and 13 RBI.
Along with Moss, CF Alex Presley also extended his hitting streak when he drove in LF Kevin Melillo for the Indians' first run of the contest in the first inning. The base hit for Presley gave him an Indians' season best 13 consecutive contests with at least one base hit, during which time he is hitting .460 (23-for-50) with 10 runs and four RBI.
Melillo, who trotted home on Presley's base knock after leading off the bottom of the first with a base hit of his own to center, drove in the Indians' second tally of the contest when he plated Diaz with a clutch two-out base hit to right. The Tribe left fielder also had a run-scoring double in the Tribe's three-run ninth and led all batters with a personal season-best four base knocks.
Along with Melillo (4-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI), Clement (2-for-5, 1 RBI) also posted a multi-hit effort for the Tribe, while along with Bocock (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB), CF John Mayberry Jr. (2-for-5, 2 R), Sellers (2-for-2, 3 R) and Hoover (2-for-4, 2 R) also collected multiple base knocks for the IronPigs.
Neither starter figured in the final decision as Indians' starter Brian Burres (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) allowed four runs on six hits over five innings of work and, in his Triple-A debut, Lehigh Valley starter Michael Cisco (6.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) allowed five runs on eight hits, while striking out five over 6.1 innings.
IronPigs reliever Michael Schwimer (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO) earned the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season after tossing 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, while fellow relievers Brian Gordon (1.0 IP, 1 H) and Antonio Bastardo (1.0 IP, 1 SO) also tossed scoreless frames out of the Lehigh Valley bullpen, with Gordon earning his fifth hold and Bastardo picking up his second save.
Indians' reliever Daniel Moskos (0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 after allowing four runs on two hits and three walks in just 0.1 innings pitched. Tribe reliever Steven Jackson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB) was a bright spot out of the bullpen as he allowed just two hits over two scoreless frames of relief.
Indianapolis wraps up its four-game series with Lehigh Valley on Thursday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. RHP Charlie Morton is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while RHP Brandon Duckworth is the probable starter for the IronPigs.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 6:40 p.m.
