G-Braves Pull Away from Yankees

The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees 3-1 on Wednesday night at PNC Field. The G-Braves pitching staff allowed only one extra-base hit on the evening - a double by Jesus Montero. With their second win of the current series, Gwinnett guaranteed themselves no less than a series split with the Yankees.

It Was Over When: In the top of the 9th inning, Diory Hernandez hit a RBI triple that scored Joe Thurston and broke a 1-1 tie. Two batters later, Brandon Hicks hit an RBI single that scored Hernandez and made the score 3-1.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Scott Diamond allowed only 1 run on 8 hits in 7.0 IP. Cory Gearrin (1-4) earned his first win, pitching a scoreless 8th. Steven Marek earned his 6th save of the season.

At the plate: Barbaro Canizares went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hernandez, Hicks, Schafer all went 1-for-4 on the night.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Tim Redding pitched 8 innings, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits and 6 strikeouts. Romulo Sanchez (7-8) earned the loss, giving up the deciding runs for Gwinnett's victory.

At the plate: Montero was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Scranton/Wilkes Barre in the final game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at PNC Field. G-Braves RHP Cristhian Martinez (2-1, 4.19 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Zach McAllister (7-6, 4.82 ERA) of the Yankees.
