Norfolk, VA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were defeated 10-7 by the Norfolk Tides on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 5,008 at Harbor Park. The Tides scored five runs in the first off of Chiefs starter Jason Jones and Syracuse batters struck out fourteen times in the loss.

Jones (1-5) went just one inning as the starter and was knocked around in the first as the Tides loaded the bases with one out. Norfolk (45-53) first baseman Michael Aubrey launched a grand slam over the fence in right to make it 4-0 Tides. Catcher Michel Hernandez added an RBI single to push the lead to 5-0 after one.

In the second, Nolan Reimold hit an RBI single off of Victor Garate to score Matt Angle and make it 6-0 after the second inning. Against Norfolk starter Armando Gabino (6-0), the first six Syracuse (54-43) batters to the plate were retired in order.

The Tides threatened with back to back one-out walks in the third but did not score. In the fourth, however, as Major League rehabber Tyler Walker came on, the Tides did score. Walker yielded a leadoff home run to Robert Andino, and then two batters later a two-run home run to Aubrey and the Tides were in front 9-0 after just three innings.

Syracuse got its first run on just its second hit of the night in the fifth inning. Luis Ordaz, who had not hit a home run since 2008 as a member of the Trent Jewett managed Indianapolis Indians, launched one to left to put the Chiefs on the board and make it 9-1 after five.

In the seventh, Leonard Davis used a two run home run off of Tides reliever Pat Egan and Syracuse was down by six runs at 9-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Andino knocked in his third run of the night on a single to right and the Tides were up by seven at 10-3.

The Chiefs began to stage a late rally starting with one run in the eighth in a Jason Botts single and then three more in the top of the ninth. Pete Orr led off with a walk against Jim Hoey and was followed by a Jamie Burke that advanced him to second. Run scoring base hits from Seth Bynum and Jason Botts, along with a score by Boomer Whiting pulled Syracuse to 10-7. Justin Maxwell, however, struck out against Frank Mata to end the rally and the game.

On Thursday, the Chiefs and Tides will play the series finale in this four game set. Righty Shairon Martis (6-5, 3.82) is scheduled to start for Syracuse along with southpaw Zach Britton (1-1, 1.50) for Norfolk. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15.
