Bluefish top Patriots 8-3 in Grand Fashion

Bridgewater, NJ - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-3 before 6,020 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday evening. Shortstop Tony Rodriguez's ninth inning grand slam gave the Bluefish a commanding lead.

The Bluefish broke the game open with a five run ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Designated hitter Gary Burnham doubled, right fielder Will Pennyfeather walked, and third baseman Brady Williams was intentionally walked to load the bases. Catcher Hector Kuilan followed with an RBI single and second baseman Kevin Lidle reached on a fielder's choice. Rodriguez followed with a grand slam, his first home run of the season, to give the Bluefish an 8-3 win.

The Patriots scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Third baseman Jeff Nettles reached on a walk and scored on a three base error that allowed shortstop Kevin Nicholson to reach third safely.

Somerset scored again in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Pat Boran reached on a fielder's choice, catcher Chris Eickhorst drew a walk, and center fielder Jeremy Owens followed with an RBI single to plate Boran and make the score 2-0.

Bridgeport cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning. Lidle drew a walk, moved to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez.

The Bluefish tied up the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Left fielder Michael Coleman reached on a single and scored on an RBI double by Williams.

The Patriots regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Owens singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. Nettles drove home Owens with an RBI single to make the score 3-2.

Bridgeport answered with a run to tie the game up 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Coleman (16).

Bluefish starter Josh Miller (3-5) picked up the win, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits and three strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Patriots reliever Brad Clontz (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two innings pitched.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday, July 6th with an 11:05 am game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Wednesday's game is a Camp Day and Business Persons' Special presented by Bullfrog Sunblock.
