Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws got a much needed road victory with a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Saturday night. The win was just Lakewood's 3rd road victory since June 1st. The BlueClaws used some very good defense by their infielders, and another nice performance from Starting Pitcher Ervis Manzanillo to limit Delmarva to just 2 runs in the game. The big blow in the ballgame was a Grand Slam HR by BlueClaws 3B Travis Mattair in the 6th inning.

Ervis Manzanillo (6-4) tossed 7 innings and allowing 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3. He allowed 1 run in each of the first 2 innings, and appeared to not be long for the game. But, the lanky lefty from Venezuela battled back and pitched 5 scoreless from there on out to collect his 6th victory as a BlueClaw. Jay Johnson pitched a scoreless 8th, and Juan Sosa faced the minimum in the 9th to pick up his 10th save of the year. Delmarva righty Scott Copeland allowed all 6 runs scored by Lakewood over 6 innings of 8 hit ball. Copeland pitched very well except for the Grand Slam eh allowed to Mattair in the 6th inning.

The BlueClaws all-time Franchise Leader in Games Played is Travis Mattair. Affectionately known by Lakewood fans as Moose, Mattair was appearing in his 272nd game as BlueClaw and he certainly did his best to make it a memorable one. He was 2-4 at the plate, and turned in a couple of highlight reel plays defensively. But, Mattair also chipped in with the biggest play of the game, a monster Grand Slam HR in the top of the 6th inning when the score was tied 2-2. It turned out to be the game winning hit, and it was also Mattair's 1st HR of the season.

Sunday will feature a very good pitching matchup in the rubber match, the final game of the 3 game series. All-Star RHP David Buchanan (8-5, 3.48 ERA) will throw for Lakewood and LHP Jacob Petit (5-3, 3.69 ERA) will start for Delmarva. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm on Sunday.
