Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The only fireworks the Augusta GreenJackets provided on Saturday night came from the postgame fireworks show presented by the GreenJackets front office. The GreenJackets fell by an 8-0 score at the hands of the Savannah Sand Gnats - the eighth time this season and third time this week that the GreenJackets have been held without a run.
Savannah did the bulk of their damage off Augusta starter Mike Kickham in the five-run third inning, sending all nine hitters to the plate. After Kickham had retired six of the first seven hitters of the game, and had recorded two outs in the third, Darrell Ceciliani singled home the first run of the contest to give the Sand Gnats an early edge. Blake Forsythe followed with a two-run triple to grow the lead to 3-0. After a walk put runners at the corners, Aderlin Rodriguez doubled home another to put the Sand Gnats on top by four. Joe Bonfe singled home another, but Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Rodriguez hit his second RBI double of the night in the fifth to put the Gnats on top by six. An inning later, Alonzo Harris singled home a run while a second scored on the same play when Harris was hung up in a rundown. At the point, the Savannah lead was 8-0 and Kickham departed shortly thereafter. Kickham (1-5) was charged with eight runs on 12 hits - both season highs - while he walked three and struck out four.
Gonzalez Germen (6-3) got his first win of the season in three starts against the GreenJackets, firing five scoreless innings. Germen scattered six hits and a walk while striking out four.
The GreenJackets tallied eight hits, but failed to hit in clutch spots for the second time in as many nights. Augusta hitters are just 1-18 in this series with runners in scoring position while the GreenJackets left ten men stranded on the basepaths, bringing their series total to 22.
Justin Schumer (3-3, 5.26) takes the ball for the GreenJackets on Sunday night as Augusta tries to salvage the series split. Savannah, looking to sweep the GreenJackets for the second time this year in a three-game series, will counter with lefty Angel Cuan (5-1, 3.38). First pitch will come at a special 7:05 p.m. Sunday night start time with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com . After the game, the GreenJackets will continue their Independence Day celebration with their second postgame fireworks show in as many nights, presented by MCG Health, NBC Augusta and Kicks 99.
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
