Rome's Skid Ends at Seven, Dogs Fall, 6-5

ROME, Ga. - Rome jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and held off multiple Charleston rallies in a 6-5 triumph in South Atlantic League action in front of a sell-out crowd at State Mutual Stadium on Saturday night.

With the win, Rome snapped a seven-game losing streak in improving to 2-8 this half, while the RiverDogs dropped to 4-6. Charleston has now lost eight consecutive one-run games.

In his return from the DL, RiverDogs starter Jose Ramirez was rocked in the first inning, as the first five Rome batters registered hits en route to a 4-0 lead. Edward Salcedo laced a two-run triple, Chris Garcia tattooed a RBI double, while Robby Hefflinger contributed a two-out RBI single.

Charleston scratched out a run in the second against Rome starter Gary Moran, cutting the deficit to 4-1 on Kelvin De Leon's RBI fielder's choice.

In the fourth inning, Anderson Feliz blistered a two-out RBI single to centerfield to further trim the Rome lead to 4-2.

Ramirez (3-3) worked just 4.0 innings in his first start since June 12, allowing four runs on eight hits with four punchouts.

Rome upped the lead to 6-2 in the fifth on Evan Gattis' RBI triple and a sacrifice fly by Tommy La Stella.

Moran (2-0) earned his first win as a starter for Rome, working 5.0 innings with two runs permitted on seven hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Kelvin De Leon and Feliz hit one-out singles in the sixth, and Eduardo Sosa chipped a sacrifice fly to left field inching Charleston to 6-3.

The comeback continued in the seventh for the RiverDogs against reliever Tom Berryhill. Gary Sanchez and Kyle Higashioka hit non-consecutive singles, and Ramon Flores knocked a RBI double making the score 6-4. Garrison Lassiter entered with two outs and legged out an infield RBI single bringing the RiverDogs within a run at 6-5, but Charleston stranded two runners to end the inning.

Gus Schlosser penned a scoreless eighth for Rome, while Kyle Mertins tossed an uneventful ninth to pin down his sixth save of the season.

Charleston outhit Rome 13-10 with five different players registering two hits.

Game three of the series, and the finale of the seven-game road trip, is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. Charleston plans to pitch right-hander Nathan Forer (1-4, 4.06 ERA) in his first start of the season against Rome right-hander Willie Kempf (0-1, 4.76 ERA).
