Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Charleston Riverdogs 6-5 Saturday night at State Mutual Stadium before a sellout crowd of 5105. The win snaps a seven game losing skid for Rome.

The Braves gave Charleston starter Jose Ramirez a rude welcome in the bottom of the first with four runs and six hits. Matt Lipka and Tony Mueller started off the inning with back to back singles on the first two pitches of the game. With runners on first and third, hot hitting Edward Salcedo roped a triple to right center to bring home both runners. Chris Garcia followed up with an RBI double and later in the inning Robert Hefflinger caped off the scoring with an RBI single to give the Braves an early 4-0 lead.

Charleston took advantage of a Matt Weaver error in the top of the second to squeeze across an unearned run and make the score 4-1. In the top of the fourth Kelvin De Leon laced a two out single and after advancing on a wild pitch scored on an Anderson Feliz RBI single to draw the score to 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth Rome would get both runs back after Salcedo walked to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI triple by catcher Evan Gattis. Tommy La Stella immediately brought Gattis home with a sacrifice fly making the score 6-2. The Riverdogs would chip away at the lead with a run in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh. Ramon Flores had an RBI double and another run scored on an infield hit by Garrison Lassiter to close the gap to 6-5.

That would be all the Riverdogs would get as Rome relievers Gus Schlosser and Kyle Mertins came in to shut the door and held them scoreless the final two and two thirds innings ending the game 6-5.

Gary Moran (2-0) picks up the win for Rome in his first start and Jose Ramirez (3-3) takes the loss for Charleston. Kyle Mertins (6) earns the save.

Rome takes on the Charleston Riverdogs tomorrow afternoon at 2pm for the rubber game of the series. For ticket information, contact the Rome Braves at 706-378-5144 or log onto www.romebraves.com.
