Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - Lakewood's third baseman Travis Mattair blasted a grand slam home run in the top of the sixth inning to key a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (40-40, 5-5) on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds wore custom patriotic uniforms that were auctioned off following the game with the proceeds benefitting the Military Assistance Program.
The Shorebirds jumped on Lakewood starter Ervis Manzanillo for runs in the first two innings. In the first, Mike Mooney was issued a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Ty Kelly hit a soft flare over first to advanced Mooney to third. Then, Mike Flacco hit a hard grounder through the left side of the infield to drive in Mooney. In the second, Garabez Rosa hit a leadoff single. Then, Mikey Planeta hit a liner into left-center field to advance Rosa to third. With Sammie Starr at the plate, Manzanillo delivered a wild pitch to plate Rosa.
Lakewood cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning. Geancarlo Mendez hit a single to open the inning. He stole second and scored a two-out single by Anthony Hewitt.
The BlueClaws exploded for five runs in the sixth inning. Mendez singled and Jim Murphy doubled to left field to open the frame with runners at second and third. Then, Domingo Santana singled to score Mendez, which tied the game at 2-2. After Scott Copeland walked Hewitt to load the bases, Travis Mattair connected on a grand slam homer to lift Lakewood to a 6-2 lead.
Manzanillo went seven innings, tied for his season high, to earn the win. He scattered seven hits and allowed two runs. Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland was tagged with the loss in six innings. He surrendered just one run on three hits in the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth.
Cameron Roth tossed two scoreless innings of relief while Ashur Tolliver worked a scoreless ninth.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws square off in the series finale on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Jacob Pettit is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
