Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE (AUGUST 9, 2010) - Wilmington scored two runs in the seventh inning to reverse a one-run deficit and then held off a ninth-inning Winston-Salem rally to beat the Dash 5-4 on Monday night at Frawley Stadium. The Dash had the tying run at second base two separate times in the ninth, but Drew Garcia struck out against Barry Bowden to snuff out Winston's last chance for a comeback.
Winston-Salem (21-22, 64-49) scored a run in the third inning against Will Smith for its first lead. Brandon Short hit a one-out triple and came home on Josh Phegley's sacrifice fly to put the Dash on top 1-0.
The Blue Rocks (24-20, 56-58) did not trail for long, as they took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the third. Rene Oriental reached against Joe Serafin when a routine grounder bounced off the glove of shortstop Greg Paiml. It was the second error in as many games for the normally sure-handed infielder. Patrick Norris and Christian Colon followed with singles, the second scoring Oriental to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Ernesto Mejia gave Wilmington the lead and an RBI triple off Nick Francis' bat made it 3-1 Rocks.
The Dash got a gift run in the fourth inning thanks to another defensive miscue. Kenny Williams, Jr. doubled with two outs and scored when Norris dropped a fly ball hit by Kyle Shelton.
A pair of home runs pushed Winston into the lead in the sixth inning. A tiring Smith surrendered a solo homer to Jose Martinez to tie the game. The home run came on the ninth pitch of the at bat. Two batters later, Williams followed with a line shot that just cleared the left field fence for another homer to give the Dash a 4-3 lead. It was Williams' first home run since opening day, a span of 187 at bats between the two.
Serafin pitched six solid innings and did not allow an earned run. Hector Santiago took over in the seventh and could not hold the slim lead. Norris reached on an infield chopper and Colon walked. High Point native Wil Myers doubled to center, trying the game and putting two men in scoring position. Mejia vaulted the Blue Rocks back into the lead with his second sacrifice fly of the game.
The Dash had a chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the ninth against Rocks closer Barry Bowden. He walked Williams and Shelton to start the inning, putting the tying run into scoring position. His first pitch to Paiml bounced up the catcher and Williams regrettably broke for third base. He was caught in a rundown and tagged out trying to make it back to second. After Paiml forced out Shelton on a fielder's choice, Short singled to put men back on first and second with two outs. Bowden worked out of the jam by striking out Garcia looking on an inside-corner fastball.
Bowden was credited with his 11th save and protected the win for reliever Harold Mozingo (4-2), who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings. Santiago (3-5) suffered the loss and the blown save after allowing two runs in two innings of work.
The series continues on Tuesday when RHP Terry Doyle (5-7, 3.46) opposes RHP Bryan Paukovits (3-3, 5.13). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
