Frederick Keys News Release

In the series opener of the four-game series in Myrtle Beach, the Keys led three different times in the contest and went on to defeat the Pelicans, 6-3. 3B/1B Miguel Abreu had a big night driving home four runs including a two-run double in the top of the eighth that gave Frederick the lead for good. With the win, the Keys improved to 22-21 in second half of the season while the Pelicans fell to 21-23.

The Keys struck first on Monday night. With two outs, RF Ronnie Welty hit a double down the leftfield line. Miguel Abreu stepped to plate and drove home Welty on single to left. The Pelicans tied up the game in the bottom of the first following a RBI single by RF Cory Harrilchak.

Ronnie Welty drove home a run in third to give Frederick a one-run lead but that was erased when the Pelicans plated two runs in the top of the fourth.

Myrtle Beach starter, RHP Paul Clemens, left the game after tossing five innings on the night. The Pelicans bullpen did not fair very well on the evening. LHP Chad Rodgers walked the first batter he faced in LF Kyle Hudson. Hudson stole second and then scored on a RBI single by Miguel Abreu.

After a scoreless seventh inning, the Keys put together a big eighth with Abreu coming through with the clutch. CF Xavier Avery led off the inning with a single to rightfield. After LF Kyle Hudson moved Avery to second on a sac bunt, Ronnie Welty was intentionally walked. After the intentional pass to Welty, LHP Luis Avilan entered the game to face Abreu. Abreu crushed an Avilan pitch down the leftfield line to bring home Avery and Welty. Abreu finished up the evening with four runs batted in, the second time he has driven home four runs against Myrtle Beach this season.

Miguel Abreu finished up the game at first base after Buck Britton left the game after he fouled a pitch off his leg. Britton did finish the bat and delivered a single to centerfield.

RHP Josh Dowdy closed out the game en route to his second save with Frederick. Zach Clark improved to 2-1 after he allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings of work. Both of Clark's victories in 2010 have come against Myrtle Beach.

The Keys and Pelicans will play game two of the four-game series on Tuesday night from BB&T Coastal Field. Frederick will send RHP Ryan O'Shea (6-6, 3.94) while Myrtle Beach will counter with LHP Matt Crim (7-9, 4.80). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the UPS Store Pregame show on the Frederick Keys Baseball Network.

The Keys return home on Friday, August 13 for NFL Night at Harry Grove Stadium. Fans who wear a NFL jersey to the game will receive $2 off their ticket. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
