Cats Drop One, Win One in Woodbridge

Lynchburg fell 8-7 to Potomac in the completion of a suspended game from last Wednesday night at City Stadium, but won the night cap with a 5-2 victory at Pfitzner Stadium to improve to 4-1 on their current eight-game road trip.
The Hillcats resumed play in the suspended game trailing 8-2 through two innings of action. Potomac had jumped to that advantage with a four-run first and second inning last Wednesday at City Stadium. Lynchburg had plated a single run in the first and second innings to account for their two runs. Cody Puckett homered in the first inning and Jose Gualdron brought in a run with a base hit in the second.
Lynchburg wasted little time chipping away at the six-run deficit as they plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Denis Phipps singled in a run and Kyle Day hit a ground rule double into the gap in right-center field. Another run came home in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Fellhauer homered for the first time since June 27th to make it an 8-5 game.
The loss went to starter Justin Walker (1-1) for Lynchburg (17-24, 46-65) and the win went to starter Marcos Frias (5-5) and the save went to Justin Phillabaum (2) for Potomac (24-17, 55-56). The win completed a series sweep for Potomac of Lynchburg.
In the night cap, a seven inning contest, Lynchburg struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Denis Phipps smoked a two-run home run out to left field for his eighth homer in 24 games with the Hillcats. Potomac answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning to pull back within a run. In the third inning the P-Nats erased the Hillcats lead with another run on the solo home run off the bat of Mike Burgess out to right field.
The Hillcats took the lead for good in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Jordan Wideman gave them a 3-2 lead. Wideman went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and he is now 5-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in his last two games. The Cats tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning with RBI singles by Cody Puckett and Chris Richburg to up the lead to 5-2.
The win went to starter Blair Carson (1-0), the hold to Justin Freeman (10) and the save to Donnie Joseph (13) for Lynchburg (18-24, 47-66). The loss went to starter Garrett Mock (0-1) for Potomac (24-18, 55-57). Mock began the season on the Washington Nationals roster. The Hillcats are now 4-1 on their current road trip and 10-7 in their last 17 road games. Meanwhile, they are 3-13 in their last 16 home games.
The series continues on Tuesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium. The Hillcats will send right-hander Curtis Partch (5-8, 5.21) to the hill opposite righty Adrian Alaniz (6-3, 2.36) for the Nationals. You can catch all the live action on KD Country's sister station AM 1000.
