Blue Rocks Fall Under .500 Following IronBirds Hot Offensive Night
April 27, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Blue Rocks looked to bounce back from a blowout loss on Wednesday in Thursday nights' slate against the Aberdeen IronBirds.
In spite of solid defense from the Blue Rocks in the first inning, the IronBirds flocked to score a crooked five runs in the second. Off the back of doubles from Adam Retzbach and Frederick Bencosme, Aberdeen put up three runs before Jackson Holliday's 2-run-homerun to deep right field that capped the scoring in the frame.
The Blue Rocks appeared to be threatening a comeback in the bottom half of the second inning with back to back doubles from Onix Vega and Trey Lipscomb setting up two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Unfortunately the Rocks were only able to scratch one run in due to a Leandro Emiliani sacrifice fly to left field. Lipscomb was stranded in scoring position.
The streaking IronBirds had an answer in the top of the third, as Dylan Beavers lead-off with a triple to left-centerfield and subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly from Adam Retzbach.
Andry Lara finished a tough outing after three innings, having let up six earned runs on seven hits.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth, James Wood made quick work to start chipping away by drilling an opposite-field double that saw him score on a sacrifice fly from Trey Lipscomb just two batters later.
Again however, Aberdeen answered back with their seventh run in the top half of the next inning, this time off an RBI base hit from Isaac De Leon.
Dannel Diaz pitched solid in his two innings of relief, striking out three and giving up only one earned run.
IronBirds starter Daniel Federman gave up only two earned runs on four hits in his four innings of work; he finished with five strikeouts.
The Blue Rocks would have another chance to strike with two outs in the bottom of sixth following back-to-back walks issued to Trey Lipscomb and T.J. White and an infield single from Leandro Emiliani. Unfortunately the Rocks were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Wilmington would fall to the IronBirds by a final score of 7-2 after splitting the first two games of the series. Weather permitting, they will run it back Friday night in game four of the series.
