Carolina Mudcats News Release
Wilmington, D.E. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks sent the Carolina Mudcats to their fifth straight loss with a 6-2 triumph on Wednesday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. The Mudcats finish their road trip 1-5, and fall to 5-7 overall.
Spencer Patton (1-0) earned the win for the surging Blue Rocks (7-5). The right-hander tossed three innings of long relief, holding Carolina to a run on two hits. He struck out five.
Mudcats' starter Jacob Lee (0-1) was hooked for the loss. Lee allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 5.1 innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out two.
Carolina opened the scoring in the first inning when Tony Wolters doubled on a fly ball to right, and scored on a base hit by Jordan Smith. Wilmington countered with a run in the second inning. Tim Ferguson grounded a backside single to right, with two out, to score the tying run.
The Blue Rocks took the lead for good with a three-run sixth. Kenny Swab began an excellent outing for the Blue Rocks with a single to bring home the go-ahead run. Wilmington made it 3-1 when Murray Watts scored on a wild pitch. A force-play grounder to short scored the third run.
Tyler Naquin scored on a double by Joey Wendle in the eighth to cut the deficit to two, but that was as close as the Mudcats would get. The Blue Rocks iced the game with two runs in bottom of the frame.
Swab finished a home run shy of the cycle for the Blue Rocks, and drove in a pair of runs. The Mudcats were held to a season-low five hits.
Carolina returns home on Thursday, April 18th, against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It will be the first "Thirsty Thursday" of the season. First pitch set for 7:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
