Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were limited to three hits Wednesday in a 2-0 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash in front of 2,646 fans at TicketReturn.com Field.

The Birds, who entered play in first place in southern division, (6-6) took two of three from the Dash on the three-game home stand.

Left-hander Victor Payano (1-1) started for the Pelicans and registered six strikeouts his first time through the order. Payano was perfect through 4.1 innings before surrendering a solo home run to Courtney Hawkins. Payano went five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in defeat.

Right-hander Chris Bassitt (1-0) claimed the win for the Dash, registering nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings against the Pelicans during last year's postseason matchup. Lefty Jarrett Casey worked the final two innings and earned his first save.

After the Hawkins solo blast in the fifth, the Dash added another run in the eighth inning on a solo shot from Mark Haddow.

Right-hander Randol Rojas worked two scoreless innings of relief. Lefty Will Lamb allowed a run on two hits during the eighth before Joe Van Meter worked an unblemished ninth.

Chris Grayson and Kellin Deglan each added doubles for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans had runners on second and third with one out in the second inning, but Edwin Garcia's ground ball back to Bassitt turned into an inning-ending double play. Bassitt tagged out Royce Bolinger between home and third before throwing it to second baseman Joey DiMichele, who tagged out Deglan between second and third to end the threat. The Pelicans were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the game.

The Pelicans hit the road tomorrow to begin a four-game series with the Carolina Mudcats, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (1-1, 9.00) starts tomorrow and he'll be opposed by left-hander Shawn Morimando (0-1, 2.25). First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. EST - all the action can be heard on AM 1050 and FM 101.9, Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans return home next Monday to host the Frederick Keys to begin a four-game series and a seven-game home stand. Monday will be a Make a Splash Monday presented by HTC - fans who donate an item listed on the "Backpack Buddies" donation list will receive half-price admission along with an autographed Pelicans baseball card.
