Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are entering their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The Pelicans need eight wins to reach 1,000 regular season wins.

THIS SERIES ... The Pelicans seek their first series sweep of the season and enter play in first place in the southern division. Last night, the Pelicans raced out to a 6-1 lead before hang-ing on to beat Winston-Salem 6-4. Kellin Deglan and Rougned Odor each hit home runs for the home standing Pelicans. Multi-home run - It was the Pelicans first multi-home run game since Kevin Torres and Odor went deep on opening night at TicketReturn.com Field. The Pelicans have hit nine home runs in 11 games, good for fourth in the league.

FOUR IN A ROW ... Twice last night the Pelicans had a pitcher strike out four Dash hitters in a row: Alec Asher fanned the final two in the sixth and the first two in the seventh, while Jon Edwards struck out the final two of the eighth and the initial two of the ninth. All told, Pelicans pitchers amassed a season-high 14 punch outs on the night.

PROMOTIONS ... Tonight is the first Wiener Wednesday of 2013 as fans will enjoy $1 hot dogs all night long. Up next - The Pelicans hit the road for four games against Carolina before returning home to begin a four-game set with Frederick and Potomac. COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.

LAST SEASON ... The Pelicans finished above .500 for the second consecutive season. With a 38-31 second-half clip, the Pelicans secured the wildcard playoff spot in the Southern Division - the team's sixth postseason berth in 14 seasons. After winning game one, the Dash claimed the final two games and the series before falling to Lynchburg in the Mills Cup Championship Series.

PROSPECTING ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans opening day roster featured six players high-lighted in Baseball America's list of the Rangers' Top 30 prospects. Right-hander Luke Jackson (No. 6), shortstop Luis Sardinas (No. 7), second baseman Rougned Odor (No. 11), third base-man Drew Robinson (No. 21) outfielder Zach Cone (No. 24) and righty Nick Martinez (No. 27).
