Potomac Nationals News Release
Salem, VA- The Potomac Nationals (6-6) completed a three-game road sweep of the Salem Red Sox (4-8) at LewisGale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 triumph on the wings of a terrific start from RHP Taylor Jordan (1-0), the winning pitcher.
After dropping two of three games in Lynchburg, the P-Nats finish their opening 2013 road trip with a record of (4-2).
Jordan tossed his third consecutive quality start after motoring through 7.0 strong innings in which he surrendered just two unearned runs on six hits while walking none and striking out five.
Salem struck the first blow as 2B Sean Coyle reached on an infield single to shortstop before stealing third base and forcing an errant throw from C Cole Leonida allowing Coyle to score.
Red Sox LHP Henry Owens (0-1), the losing pitcher of record, pitched well but could not match the prowess of his opposite number.
Potomac tallied three runs in the 4th frame courtesy of a line drive two-run double up the left field chalk belted by 2B Adrian Sanchez. Then an error by Salem SS Nick Natoli on a ball that got through his legs hit by 1B Justin Miller gave the Nationals a 3-1 lead.
Salem earned one run back, another unearned tally, against Jordan in the 7th stanza as CF Brandon Jacobs sent a bloop single up the right field line which lead to a high throw from Sanchez on a ball struck softy to shortstop by 1B Jose Garcia allowing Jacobs to get to third base. Natoli would wrap an RBI groundout to2B Khayyan Norfork who shoveled to first base with his barehand to get the out despite the run coming in to score to put the contest at 3-2 in favor of the P-Nats.
In the top of the 9th, Leonida cranked a long ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to propel the Nationals to a 4-2 lead the visitors would not relinquish.
P-Nats RHP Tyler Herron (SV 1) was phenomenal out of the bullpen striking out the side in the 8th inning and fanning two more in the 9th stanza to garner his first save of the season.
Potomac travels back to Woodbridge, VA to take on the Frederick Keys (Baltimore Orioles) in a four game home series at Pfitzner Stadium from Thursday, April 18th through Sunday, April 21st.
