Winston-Salem Dash News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (April 17, 2013) - Behind Chris Bassitt's career-high seven scoreless innings and a pair of solo homers, Winston-Salem avoided a sweep with a 2-0 victory over Myrtle Beach Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field.

Bassitt (1-0) allowed only two hits and whiffed a career-high nine, including all three men he faced in his final frame, to record his first decision of 2013. In his six career appearances against the Pelicans, Bassitt has not allowed a run in 23 and a third innings of work, which includes seven scoreless frames in last year's postseason.

Myrtle Beach (6-6) starter Victor Payano (1-1) took a perfect game into the fifth inning, but that bid, along with his shutout attempt, went away when Courtney Hawkins crushed a solo shot beyond the left field seats and out of the ballpark. Hawkins is now tied for the Carolina League lead with five homers.

The Dash (6-6) scored their other run in the same way. Mark Haddow clubbed a solo homer to left in the eighth for his first long ball of the campaign. Haddow went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, which is the longest by a CL swinger thus far this year.

Bassitt and southpaw Jarrett Casey, who tossed the final two innings for his first save of the season, combined to surrender only three hits, the lowest number allowed by Dash pitching this season. Winston-Salem leads the circuit with a team ERA of 3.03.

As a result, Winston avoids its second sweep of the young season and regains a share of first place in the Southern Division standings. The Dash also earned their first shutout victory of the season after recording a league-high 15 a year ago.

Winston-Salem opens up an eight-game homestand Thursday night at 7 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks from BB&T Ballpark. The Dash's top pitching prospect, right-hander Chris Beck (1-1, 0.00 ERA), will oppose Kansas City's top overall farmhand, righty Kyle Zimmer (0-0, 1.64 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 600 AM-WSJS and wsdash.com.

Tickets are still available for the upcoming homestand, which kicks off with All-You-Can-Eat Night Thursday. Fans will enjoy unlimited hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers through the seventh inning. Call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com to purchase tickets.
