Winston-Salem Dash News Release

___
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (5-6) at MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (6-5)
RHP Chris Bassitt (0-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. LHP Victor Payano (1-0, 1.93 ERA)
7:05 p.m. - TicketReturn.com Field (Myrtle Beach, SC)
WINSTON-SALEM'S RALLY FALLS SHORT The Dash plated three runs in the final two innings Tuesday night at Myrtle Beach, but the Pelicans held on for a 6-4 victory to claim sole possession of first place in the Southern Division through 11 games. Winston trailed by five in the eighth when a hit by pitch and three walks pushed across the Dash's second run, but the Dash left the bases loaded. In the ninth, Joey DeMichele and Chris Curley each brought home a run, but Kevan Smith flew out as the tying run. As a result, the Dash are in danger of getting swept for the second time in 2013.
SWEEP STREAK Winston-Salem suffered a sweep in the opening series of the season at Carolina, which snapped an impressive streak. Before that brooming in Zebulon, the Dash had not been swept in their previous 57 sets. The last time Winston-Salem was on the wrong side of a sweep was July 9-11 of 2011 at Salem. Between the two broomings, Winston-Salem had faced a possible sweep seven times and won all of those games by a combined score of 57-21, which computes to an average of 8.1-3.0.
SWEEP HISTORY Since becoming the Dash prior to the 2009 season, Winston-Salem has only been swept eight times, including this season's lid-lifter in Zebulon. Last season alone, Winston swept its opposition nine times. The Dash's single-season record for sweeps is three (2011). The Dash have never scored double-digit runs when suffering a brooming since 2009. Since BB&T Ballpark opened in 2010, the Dash have never been swept at home (64 all-time series).
CURLEY'S FURY Dash infielder Chris Curley has turned in four consecutive multi-hit efforts, while he has hit safely in six straight since April 11. Curley leads the club and is sixth in the Carolina League with a .361 average (13-for-36). He is tied for fourth in homers (3) and tied for third in RBIs (10), too.
MAKING HIS MARK Winston-Salem outfielder Mark Haddow, who received his first day off during the 2013 season Tuesday, has hit safely in nine straight games, which is the longest streak in the Carolina League thus far this year. Haddow is hitting .364 (12-for-33) with five RBIs and seven runs scored during the streak, which began during the second game of the season. The San Diego, Calif., native extended his streak in the ninth inning Monday. It was the second time he continued the streak in his final at-bat of a game.
PITCHING PROWESS Through 11 games, Winston-Salem boasts the best earned run average in the Carolina League (3.32). The Dash have surrendered only 35 earned runs in 95 innings of work. However, the Dash do lead the circuit in unearned runs allowed (15), and the staff sits in seventh in WHIP (1.43). Winston has also surrendered the third-most hits in the CL (97).
ROTATION AND RELIEVERS ROLLING Both the rotation and the bullpen have thrived for Winston-Salem. Before Tuesday's game, Dash starters had been 2-1 with a 1.02 earned run average in their previous three games. The Dash's bullpen boasts a 2.75 ERA in 39.1 innings of action thus far this season. Winston-Salem relievers have whiffed 46 batters, or 10.5 men per nine innings. Thus far this season, the bullpen's strikeout-to-walk ratio is 46-to-12, or almost four strikeouts to every walk.
EIGHT-GAME HOMESTAND ON DECK After Wednesday's series finale on the Grand Strand, the Dash will return home for an eight-game homestand, which matches a season-long run at BB&T Ballpark (July 4-11 against Myrtle Beach and Potomac). Winston-Salem will entertain a pair of 2012 playoff qualifiers as Wilmington comes calling from Thursday to Sunday before the Dash and Lynchburg Hillcats meet for the first time since last year's Mills Cup Championship Series from Monday to Thursday.
