August 24, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks on Thursday looked to recover from a heartbreaking loss just 24 hours prior. Fortunately, dominance both offensively and defensively spurred a 7-1 victory over the Jersey Shore Blue Claws 7-1.
Wilmington would jump out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to a wild pitch from BlueClaws starter Gunner Mayer scoring Daylen Lile from third. Will Frizzell would double the lead with an RBI double to center field.
The Rocks would not let up, as Yohandy Morales delivered an RBI single that scored Kevin Made, securing a 3-0 lead after two.
In the third, Made would be walked with the bases loaded, scoring Jared McKenzie. Lile would follow suit with an RBI single to right field plating Cortland Lawson. Another wild pitch, this time from Malik Binns, scored the final run of a hatrick for the inning. 6-0 advantage Blue Rocks heading into the fourth.
A third wild pitch of the game for Jersey Shore plated the last Blue Rocks run in the fourth inning. It would be more than enough for the Wilmington pitching staff to work comfortably.
Starter Thaddeus Ward dealt four shutout innings on just three hits, passing the baton to Jose Mujica in benign fashion. Mujica issued a shutdown fifth inning and gave way to relievers Dannel Diaz (2 IP) and Matt Merrill (2 IP), surrendering just one run in the top of the ninth inning.
The dominant win for the Blue Rocks will hopefully shift the series back in their favor, and provide the fans Wilmington fans with optimism as the season's conclusion sneaks up.
