August 24, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville Drive (21-30, 57-60) starter Dalton Rogers allowed just two hits and struck out five in five innings of work while reliever Joey Stock allowed a lone hit in two innings from the mound, and reliever Felix Cepeda allowed just one run in his two innings of work, boosting the Drive to a 5-2, eight-game-losing-streak-ending victory over the Hickory Crawdads (33-17, 60-51) on Thursday night.
Greenville flipped the script on the series, this time drawing first blood with a three-run first inning. Kyle Teel drove in Roman Anthony with a double before Eddinson Paulino scored Teel and Tyler Miller later in the inning with a double of his own.
Rogers cruises through his five innings of work including tossing three no-hit innings to start the game. He allowed just one base runner in those frames, a walk to Wyatt Langford before a Max Acosta single became the first Crawdads' hit in the fourth.
Roman Anthony chipped in an RBI-single in the fourth, scoring Gilberto Jimenez, who tripled in the previous at-bat to lead off the inning. Anthony recorded two hits on the night.
Back-to-back walks in the fifth came back to bite Rogers as a single and then a sacrifice fly from Daniel Mateo scratched across Hickory's first run of the night. Rogers would get the final out of the fifth before being relieved by Stock in the sixth.
Greenville added its fifth and final run of the night in the seventh as Ricky DeVito struggled for the Crawdads. After nabbing two quick outs, he hit Anthony with a pitch and issued back-to-back walks before hitting Allan Castro with a hit to bring in Anthony from third.
Stock closed the door on the Crawdads in the sixth and seventh, needing just 30 pitches to send the game to the eighth while ringing up four Crawdads' batters.
Cepeda finally gave up a run after 15.0 scoreless innings since his call up in mid-July. Abimelec Ortiz launched his 23rd homer of the year to lead off the ninth and draw the Crawdads closer, but Cepeda recovered, collecting two strikeouts and a groundout to put the game away.
The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action on Friday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. against the Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers) for a game four of the six-game series. Hickory leads the series, 2-1.
