
Blowfish Secure 4th Seed with Win over Copperheads

ASHEBORO, N.C.- The Columbia Blowfish topped the Asheboro Copperheads 3-0 Thursday night in their final regular season game. The win clinches the number four seed in the 2012 Petitt Cup Playoffs. The Blowfish will travel to Wilmington to take on the Sharks on Saturday before returning home Sunday to host game to of the first round. The Blowfish will also host the if-necessary game on Monday.
In Thursday night's game the Blowfish got an excellent pitching performance from Wyatt Brown. Brown gave the Blowfish six two hit innings while striking out six. Brown did not give up a run and got the win for the Blowfish.
The Blowfish struck first in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Tre-Von Johnson led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. Johnson then stole second and advanced to third when the throw got into the outfield. Johnson scored when Zach Smith laced a double into right centerfield.
The Blowfish would add two more runs in the seventh to take the 3-0 lead. Stuart Pound led the inning off with a double, and then advanced to third on a Smith groundout. Pound then scored on a wild pitch. Federico Castagnini then walked and scored on a Michael Wilson double to left centerfield.
The Blowfish got great pitching from their bullpen in the final three innings. Connor Sullivan pitched a scoreless seventh giving up one hit. Adam Albers then pitched the eighth striking out one and Jeff Kinley pitched the ninth for the Blowfish striking out one to get the save.
The Blowfish will return home Sunday for game two of the Petitt Cup Playoffs first round. The Blowfish will host the Wilmongton Sharks and tickets are available at blowfishbaseball.com or by calling 254-FISH.
The Columbia Blowfish are in their seventh season at Historic Capital City Stadium and are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
