
Steamers End Regular Season With Win

HAMPTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (36-17, 18-9) wrapped up the regular season with a 7-1 win over the Peninsula Pilots on Thursday at War Memorial Stadium.
The Steamers took an early 1-0 lead when Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) hit an RBI ground out that scored Jason Kanzler (University of Pennsylvania) who singled earlier in the inning. Kanzler scored his team-leading 38the run of the season.
Edenton upped their lead to 2-0 when Michael Massi (Mercer University) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second.
Johnny Garrett (Southern Arkansas University) picked up his second RBI in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single that scored Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania). Kanzler followed with an RBI double that scored Garrett and made it 3-0 Steamers.
Peninsula scored their one and only run on a single and a walk and then Andrew Amaro reached on an error that allowed Andrew Montague to score.
Edenton added another run in the top of the sixth when Michael Massi scored on an error and Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) singled home Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) in the top of the eighth for a 6-1 lead.
Edenton added the final run, unearned, in the top of the eighth on Madison Beaird's RBI walk to make it 7-1.
Matt Adams (Southern Polytechnic State University) pitched five innings allowing no runs on just one hit, he walked two and struck out 10. He improved to 4-0 on the season.
Eric Buckland made the start for Peninsula and her fell to 2-2 on the season. Kanzler doubled in fourth inning and tied the Steamers tied their franchise record for doubles in a season with 100. Camporeale led the team with 18 doubles. The Steamers finished the season 10-2 against their East Division rivals this season. Robbie Zinsmeister had four hits and Wes Meadows had two this and an RBI.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
