Regular Season Finale Rained Out

August 2, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Thursday night's regular season finale between the Wilmington Sharks and the Thomasville HiToms has been cancelled due to rain.

The game got started on time, but the field was cleared at 7:30 with two outs in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning, though no rain was falling at the time. Wilmington was leading 1-0 and had nobody on base. After rain came and soaked the field over an extended period of time, the umpires eventually made the decision not to resume at approximately 9:15 p.m.

It was the fourth rain out for the Sharks this season that will not be made up, meaning the club finished the regular season playing just 52 of their originally scheduled 56 games.

Due to the cancellation, the result of the Columbia vs. Asheboro game has no effect on the standings because the Sharks rest at the fifth seed going into the Petitt Cup Playoffs. However, the Blowfish did beat the Copperheads 3-0 at McCrary Park.

Wilmington will host the Blowfish in Game 1 of the postseason on Saturday, with game time to be determined. The Sharks will then travel to Capital City Stadium on Sunday and, if game 3 is necessary, on Monday. The only regular season contest between the two teams was rained out, on July 1 in Columbia.

The Wilmington Sharks are members of Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Currently in its 16th season, The Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer. The CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 51 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
