Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Central Hockey League today named Thunder veteran right wing Joe Blaznek the Sherwood CHL Player of the Month for January, Wichita's CHL-most, 10th award winner this season.
A native of Allen Park, Michigan, Blaznek piled up the points last month, notching 11 goals and 26 points in just 11 games. Blaznek and his two linemates, Jason Duda and Travis Clayton, combined for 30 goals and 75 points in January, as the Thunder went 7-3-1.
Blaznek's best effort came on January 14th in New Mexico, when he amassed four goals and six points, both CHL season-highs. He scored five points the following night in New Mexico, earning Oakley CHL Player of the Week Honors. For the month, Blaznek had seven multi-point games, including two hat tricks.
Blaznek has continued his torrid play in February, picking up four goals and two assists in two games, both Thunder wins. He also earned the CHL Performance of the Week for his four-point effort on Saturday, in which he scored two goals then assisted on both the game-tying and game-winning overtime goals of a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Eagles. The win pulled the Thunder within two points of the first place Eagles.
With 26 goals and 53 points in just 41 games, Blaznek has already surpassed his totals from last season of 24 goals and 52 points in 63 games. Since coming to Wichita from Lubbock last January, Blaznek has amassed 36 goals and 69 points in 65 games, including 10 game-winners.
Jason Duda, Scott Allison, Jason Flick (twice) and Travis Clayton (twice) have all been named Oakley CHL Players of the Week this season. Clayton also was named the Sherwood CHL Player of the Month for December, while Jamie Vandespyker was the Sherwood CHL Goaltender of the Month for October.
