Sher-Wood CHL Player& Goaltender of the Month Announced
February 9, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Northwest Division frontrunners Wichita and Colorado lead the Central Hockey League in both points and winning percentage, and today each had a player selected as the CHL's Sher-Wood Player and Goaltender of the Month for January. Wichita center Joe Blaznek was tabbed CHL Player of the Month after scoring 26 points in 11 games to lead the Thunder to a 7-3-1 mark, while Colorado All-Star rookie netminder Tyler Weiman earns his second straight CHL Goaltender of the Month award after posting a perfect 9-0-0 record and three shutouts during January. Both players will receive a custom designed leather jacket from Sher-Wood, the official stick, glove, pant and protective equipment supplier to the CHL.
Blaznek was dominant during January, and recorded seven multiple point outings for Wichita. His top performances came in back-to-back contests at New Mexico January 14th and 15th, totaling six goals and five assists, and on January 27th against visiting Corpus Christi, posting a hat-trick and an assist in a 6-2 win. After scoring just twice in the Thunder's first 18 games, Blaznek has emerged as a dangerous weapon along with All-Star teammates Jason Duda and Travis Clayton (ranked first and second in the CHL scoring race), racking up 24 goals and 22 assists in his last 23 contests.
Rookie Weiman continued his improbable assault on the CHL record book with another exceptional month. He allowed a total of 12 goals against in nine wins (1.34 goals against average, .956 save percentage) and posted shutouts against Lubbock, Laredo and Topeka to give him a CHL record-tying total of eight on the season. Weiman's current goals against average of 1.62 and save percentage of .944 would also both establish new CHL single season records. The 20-year old was a 5th Round Draft selection of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche in 2002.
