Kamloops Blazers News Release
The Kamloops Blazers (17-2-0-1) suffered their first loss on home ice at the hand of the Edmonton Oil Kings (11-4-1-2) 2-1 on home ice Tuesday night. The Oil Kings were led by stellar goaltending in Laurent Brossoit who made 31 saves and goals by Mitch Moroz and Henrik Samuelsson.
The Oil Kings got off to a great start as they scored 21 seconds into the game. Travis Ewanyk centered a puck to Mitchell Moroz who scored on his own rebound to make it 1-0 Oil Kings early on. The Blazers were off to a sluggish start but picked it up as the game got going. They had three power plays in the period and did everything right but score a goal as Laurent Brossoit made tremendous saves on Brendan Ranford and JC Lipon to keep it 1-0. The Oil Kings built on their lead on a power play of their own. Henrik Samuelsson took the puck to the net and his back hand deflected off a Blazers stick and went upstairs past goaltender Cole Cheveldave to make it 2-0. The Blazers had a solid period and outshot the Oil Kings 14-10.
The second period started off with a glorious chance for the Blazers. Colin Smith fed Tim Bozon who was stoned by Brossoit. The Oil Kings though were the better team in the period. They created chances and odd man rushes but goaltender Cole Cheveldave was up to the task. Cheveldave made a few tremendous saves to keep the score at 2-0. The Oil Kings outshot the Blazers 15-9 in the period.
As it seems to be, no team is safe with a 2-0 lead against the Blazers. The Blazers put pressure on the Oil Kings and they finally beat Brossoit. Aspen Sterzer got a puck back to defenseman Marek Hrbas. His shot was tipped by Brendan Ranford and past Brossoit to make it 2-1 with 7:07 to play. The Blazers were awarded a power play with 5:30 to play but did not generate anything off it. The Blazers outshot the Oil Kings 9-1 in the period, but it wasn't going to happen on this night as the Blazers fell 2-1 on home ice in front of 4,586 fans.
The Blazers dropped their first home game of the season and are now 8-1-0-0 on home ice. The line of Colin Smith, Tim Bozon and JC Lipon was held off the scoresheet for a third straight game despite generating a ton of offence once again.
Laurent Brossoit was stellar in goal making 31 saves, while Cole Cheveldave was solid turning aside 24 shots. The Blazers were 0-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The hockey club will now hit the road for three games in three nights as they play in Spokane Friday, Tri-City Saturday and Portland on Sunday.
