Blaze Light Up Ports 15-1

June 22, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif- On the weather calendar, June 21st is the longest day of the year. That sentiment echoed true for the Stockton Ports (2-1, 37-35) on Wednesday night, as they suffered their worst loss of the season by a final of 15-1 at the hands of the Bakersfield Blaze (1-2, 29-44). The loss comes on the heels of the best win of the year the night before with a 12-8 come from behind victory, and ends Stockton's season best five game winning streak.

The Ports offense has been the story of this series, but the Blaze offense was the story of this night. Bakersfield gave Ports starter Mike Madsen (3-4) a rude welcome back from AA-Midland, as they pounded him for eight runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Blaze caught fire in the third inning, scoring seven runs on nine hits. That was more than enough support for starter John Bannister (3-8), who earned the win after going seven innings and allowing just a run on two hits while striking out nine in his best outing of the season. Bakersfield went on to add a run in the seventh, two more in the eighth, and four more in the ninth. The four runs in the ninth came at the hands of Ports closer Mike Mitchell, who struggled in mop-up duty. Prior to the game, Mitchell was named as a late selection to the California/Carolina League All-Star Game in Salem, Virginia.

The lone bright spot of the night for Stockton was Luis Perez, who had the Ports only two hits, including a solo homer that provided their lone run in the seventh.

Despite the tough loss, the Ports are still 5-1 on the homestand, and will try and get back on the winning track on Thursday night when they host the Visalia Oaks. Ryan Ford (5-5, 4.33 ERA) will be on the hill for Stockton, opposed by Brandon Mann (3-7, 5.73 ERA) for Visalia. Thursday also marks Wingfest 2006 at Banner Island Ballpark, where restaurants from around the Central Valley will submit their chicken wings for the title of "Best in Fest." Gates open at 6 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. start.
