Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA-Lake Elsinore scored five runs in the final four innings and the Quakes managed just two hits in the first eight frames as the Storm doubled up Rancho Cucamonga 6-3 before a crowd of 2,245 at the Epicenter Wednesday night. The Storm improved to 2-0 in the second half and 38-34 overall, while the Quakes fell to 1-1 and 33-40.
A pair of solo home runs accounted for all the scoring in the first half of the game, with Chase Headley getting his team-high ninth of the year for Lake Elsinore in the first and Quakes catcher Michael Collins answering with a ball tat just stayed fair down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth for his fourth homer of the season. Lake Elsinore took the lead for good in the sixth when Peter Ciofrone led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch by Quakes starter Jose Arredondo, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Brown. The Storm then added a pair of RBI singles in the eight to make it 4-1 and tacked on two insurance runs on a two-run single by Jeremy Cleveland in the ninth. Rancho Cucamonga mounted a slight rally in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double from Collins and run-scoring single by Sean Rodriguez, but the Quakes never got the tying run to the plate.
Woody Williams started for Lake Elsinore on a Major League rehab assignment and looked good, retiring the first eight men he faced and striking out five in three scoreless innings. Brent Carter (5-2) followed as scheduled and got the win, allowing just a run on two hits in five innings and recording 13 straight outs at one point. Arredondo (4-6) turned in his team-leading eighth quality start for the Quakes but still suffered the loss, allowing two runs and four hits in seven innings. He walked three and struck out eight to push his league-high total to 108 Ks in just 82.0 innings of work. Collins went 2-4 to lead the offense.
The Quakes next begin a three-game road trip in Adelanto against the High Desert Mavericks Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. Fernando Rodriguez (6-3, 4.20 ERA) will start for the Quakes while All-Star Billy Buckner (7-1, 3.89 ERA) gets the ball for the Mavs. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
Notes: The Quakes announced today that RHP Amalio Diaz has been transferred to the Arizona League Angels and RHP Aaron Pullin has been received from Class AA Arkansas. Diaz was 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in four starts with the Quakes and did not allow a run in any of his three victories. Pullin was signed as free agent in 2003 out of the University of Texas at Arlington and was 1-0 with one save and a 5.49 ERA in 25 relief appearances for the Travelers. He has never pitched in Rancho Cucamonga, skipping over the Quakes and going straight to Arkansas after spending all of 2004 in Cedar Rapids. Last year Pullin appeared in 51 games for Arkansas, tied for third-most in the Texas League. All 146 of his career appearances have come out of the bullpen.
