Blatny Assigned To Falcons

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that their National Hockey Hockey League affiliate, the Tampa Bay Lightning, has traded goaltender Brian Eklund to the Boston Bruins in exchange for left wing Zdenek Blatny. In conjunction with the trade, the Lightning has assigned Blatny to the Falcons.

Blatny is in his fifth season of professional hockey and has spent time with both the Providence and Boston Bruins this season. In 35 games with Providence this season, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Brno, Czech Republic, has recorded eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points. Blatny is currently ranked fifth on Providence in scoring this season and also ranked fifth on the team in plus/minus with a +6 rating.

Blatny has played in 25 career NHL games, five with Boston and 20 with the Atlanta Thrashers. Blatny was originally drafted by the Thrashers in the third round (68th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Blatny split three seasons (2001-2004) between the Thrashers and the Chicago Wolves before spending the 2004-05 campaign playing in Europe.

Eklund played in 17 games for the Falcons this season posting a record of 5-11-1 with a 4.19 goals against average. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound native of Braintree, MA made his NHL debut on November 8, 2005 against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Falcons return home on Wednesday, February 8 when they host the Albany River Rats at the MassMutual Center starting at 7:05 PM. Springfield begins a three-game road trip this weekend in Norfolk on Friday b before concluding the trip in Philadelphia on Sunday. All games can be heard live on the Falcons Hockey Network, WMAS AM 1450, as "The Voice" of the Falcons John Michael handles the play-by-play duties. All games can also be seen live through the B-2 Network for only $6.00.
