Blades Welcome Hundreds for Health Care Worker Appreciation Week
November 4, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
On Wednesday, as the Saskatoon Blades staged a late-game comeback to beat Swift Current in a shootout, hundreds of health care workers from the community were welcomed into SaskTel Centre to witness the game free of charge.
This, thanks to the help and generosity of our friends from Saskatoon Media Group and the three sister radio stations; The Bull 92.9, 98 CoolFM, and 600 CJWW Radio.
"As we all know, healthcare workers in the community have been giving it 110% and going above and beyond the call of duty for nearly the last two years," Blades director of business operations Tyler Wawryk said. "They've really put their (work) ahead of their family time, and they're doing everything they can to make sure people are safe and healthy. Those are the real heroes in our community and the real role models."
In honour of Health Care Worker Appreciation Week, the Blades donated more than 500 tickets to Saskatoon Media Group, which were dispersed across the community to health care employees in the days leading up to the game.
A grand total of 584 tickets were delivered to numerous health care facilities and curbside drop-off spots in Saskatoon and the surrounding area.
"I think it's the least we can do is to give (health care workers) a night off, and encourage them to relax and enjoy the hockey game," added Wawryk. "We're just happy that we're able to offer that in partnership with the folks at (SMG) and we can't say enough for what they've done for our community to get to a point where we're able to return to playing hockey. We're grateful to be able to be a part of this."
CJWW morning radio host Dave Thomas circled around the city dropping off a special delivery of tickets at health care facilities on Monday and Tuesday. When the doors to SaskTel Centre opened ahead of Wednesday's game, hundreds of community heroes flooded the stands and cheered the Blades to victory.
The Saskatoon Blades would like to thank the efforts of Saskatoon Media Group for putting this initiative together, and generously acknowledge health care workers who are working endlessly to keep our community safe.
