Saskatoon Blades News Release
The Saskatoon Blades had trouble generating any offense all night long and suffered a 5-1 loss to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday evening.
Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) scored the lone goal in the contest for the Blades, who have lost three of their last four games.
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead 8:45 into the contest while on the power play. Colin Archer's point shot hit a body in front and found its way to Alex Petrovic at the top of the crease, who put home his 2nd of the season.
The hometown squad made it 2-0 less than six minutes into the second period again on the power play. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins collected a loose puck behind the net and snuck a wraparound past the right pad of Blades' goaltender Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC) for his 16th of the season.
Willie Coetzee gave the Rebels a three-goal lead with his first of two on the night midway through the second period with a hard laser shot that beat Morrison on the blocker side.
The score went to 4-0 before the second period was out as Turner Elson grabbed a rebound off an Adam Kambeitz wrist shot and deposited a shorthander marker for his 3rd of the year.
Coetzee made it 5-0 with his second of the night and 13th of the season with a one-timer on the power play 44 seconds into the third period.
Wintoneak broke Kuemper's shutout bid on the power play at the 10:43 mark of the third period after taking a cross-crease pass from Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK) for his 16th of the season.
Final score Red Deer Rebels 5, Saskatoon Blades 1.
Morrison made 41 saves in a losing cause for the Blades and suffered his fifth defeat of the season. Kuemper stopped 35 of 36 shots sent his way, including denying Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) on a second period penalty shot.
The Blades see their season mark go to 21-6-0-3 for 45 points on the season and remain in first in the East Division but just three points up on the second place Brandon Wheat Kings. The Rebels improve to 15-14-0-0 for 30 points on the season.
The Blades are next in action this coming Wednesday when the Brandon Wheat Kings are in town. Game time at Credit Union Centre is 7:05 pm. Tickets are available online at ticketmaster.ca, by calling 938-7800, or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet. The game will be presented on the WHL on SHAW across Western Canada on SHAW TV and Shaw Direct 'Channel 299'.
