
Chiefs Sneak By T-Birds

The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane.
The T-Birds face the Everett Silvertips on Saturday at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m. Officers from the Lakewood Police Independent Guild will be at the game against the Silvertips accepting monetary donations for the Guild to support the families of the four slain Lakewood police officers. The T-Birds are also offering four free tickets to police officers for the game against Everett. Police officers will need to show proper identification at the ShoWare Center box office to receive their free tickets.
Spokane (17-8-2-0) opened the scoring at 9:43 of the first period on a goal by Jared Spurgeon. Mitch Wahl and Kenton Miller had the assists.
Seattle (10-17-1-3) tied the game on a power-play goal by Lindsay Nielsen at 16:52 of the first. Jeremy Schappert and Prab Rai assisted on the goal.
The Chiefs outshot the T-Birds 11-7 in the first period.
Spokane led in shots 22-14 after a scoreless second period.
The Chiefs took a 2-1 lead 47 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal by Kyle Beach. Stefan Ulmer and Spurgeon had the assists.
The T-Birds tied the just over five minutes later when Rai converted at 5:51 of the third. Nielsen had the only assist on Rai's team leading 17th goal of the season.
Spokane went in front 3-2 at 16:27 of the third on a goal by Dominik Uher. Steve Kuhn had the only assist.
Beach added an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left in the game to seal the win for the Chiefs. Tyler Johnson and Spurgeon assisted on the goal.
The Chiefs outshot the T-Birds 11-9 in the third period and 33-23 in the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 29 saves on 32 shots and his record is now 8-13-1-3.
Spokane goalie James Reid stopped 21 of 23 shots and his record is now 15-4-2-0.
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
