Saskatoon Blades News Release
EDMONTON, AB - This game against Edmonton was one of the biggest in almost three years as the playoff hopes for Saskatoon continues to be on the fence.
"I thought it was a great effort but unfortunately we couldn't get a bounce to go our way. I thought that was a tough bounce on their third goal to get the lead late in the second. But our guys battled to the end but we had our opportunities as well. WE had the power-play but we just couldn't get one to go in but overall I thought we gave it everything we had against an experienced team and a team that's been down the road and knows how to win in these types of situations," says Woods on the efforts given by his team.
The Blades got off to a hot start as Braylon Shmyr down the wing got the pass to Nick Zajac a partial breakaway and he finished it off by going high glove on Patrick Dea for a 1-0 Blades lead just over 4 minutes in the game.
A power-play for the Oil Kings lead to Davis Koch driving the net with Hajek trying to stop the play but Koch some how got the puck up in the air and just got the puck past the goal line on Hamm to tie the game at 1.
Past the halfway point of the first, Brett Pollock spun to pas it to a streaking Andrew Koep who went upstairs on Hamm to give the Oil Kings their first lead of the game to make the score 2-1.
Both teams exchanged very good chances in the first as the game got more intense as the night continued.
Half way past the second, the Blades with a man advantage to try and equalize the score and equalize they shall as Dustin Perillat unloaded a slap shot from the point that beat Dea low blocker to tie the game at two.
A late goal for the Oil Kings with 28 seconds left in the second, Davis Koch drove the net as Dario Meyer made the pass but went off a falling Koch and that went in past Hamm as the they take a 3-2 lead.
A big third period for Blades as they look to get back into the hockey game but unfortunately it went the other way.
On another Edmonton power-play, Brett Pollock with a nifty pass behind the net lead to Lane Bauer in the slot who went upstairs on Hamm making it a 4-2 hockey game.
Pollock would continue to get on the score sheet with a goal of his own as he let a wrist shot go that beat Hamm in that same area as the previous goal to add some insurance for the Oil Kings as they won on this night with a 5-2 score.
"It's a tough road ahead. We needed that one tonight but it wasn't in the cards. We got seven games left to battle hard and everyone here is fighting for certain things," says Woods.
The Blades will still be playing for playoff hopes as they head into Calgary tomorrow night to face off against the Hitmen.
