Brandon, MB. - The National Director for the World Traditional Karate Organization of Canada is the latest recipient of the Atom Jet Group Community Hero Award.

In making the announcement, Atom Jet Group and the Wheat Kings confirmed that longtime Brandon Karate instructor Scott Middleton will be recognized during Saturday's Western Hockey league game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

Middleton, who started karate as a young boy after it captured his imagination, has participated and has been successful in a wide variety of provincial, national and international tournaments.

In addition to his tournament success, this married father of two beautiful girls is very popular as a guest instructor and is continually being invited to teach across Europe and North America. In 2016 alone he will be teaching in Ireland, England, Sweden, Amsterdam, New York City, Cincinnati and Toronto. As well, he has run the Traditional Karate of Brandon for the past 24 years, educating both adults and youth from across western Manitoba.

"One person that knows how deeply consumed my life is by karate is my wife Dawn," says Middleton, who has been a City of Brandon employee for the past 26 years. "While she lovingly calls me crazy...she sees that every morning, seven days a week, I start with training at 5:30 am. She sees the discipline, effort and commitment that I have given towards karate for nearly thirty years."

"I consider myself an ambassador of karate and make every attempt to educate the public on what true karate is," he adds. "The benefits are often intangible and will only manifest themselves through time. Children and adults can benefit from karate in many ways beyond the physical."

The Traditional Karate of Brandon has various programs for all ages and abilities. For more information, visit traditionalkarateofbrandon.ca or by calling 728-2612.

Making a difference in so many western Manitoban's lives has earned Middleton March's Community Hero of the Month Award, presented by Atom Jet Group.

The Wheat Kings, who currently lead the WHL's Eastern Conference with an impressive 43-18-4-2 record, will kick off a weekend home and home series with the Blades in Saskatoon on Friday night.

Tickets to Saturday's game - presented by Tim Hortons - can be purchased at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
