Blades Best Raiders in OT for Second Time this Season
October 5, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Prince Albert, SK - For just the second time since the 2017-18 Western Hockey League season, the Saskatoon Blades have conquered the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre. Chase Wouters sealed the victory at the 1:03 mark of overtime as the Blades skated off 2-1 victors.
Captain Wouters may have scored the overtime game-winning-goal, but goaltender Nolan Maier was the man who got his team to the sudden-death-stage with 36 saves in the win.
Notably, Maier remained composed during an onslaught of Raider shots during the 2nd period which saw Prince Albert outshoot Saskatoon 16 to 5. His miraculous performance paved the way for the Blue & Gold's memorable triumph & earned himself 1st Star Honours.
The Raiders' only goal of the night came just 1:52 into the game - however the visitors quickly equalized through Aidan De La Gorgendiere who walked the line and sniped his career first WHL goal. He was set up by Cyle McNabb & Libor Zabransky on the play.
The scores remained level, largely thanks to Maier's outstanding play, until a set play with 1:03 left in overtime allowed the Blades to prevail.
Playing three-on-three, Wouters won a face-off back to Scott Walford who slowly carried the puck behind the net and waited for Riley McKay & Wouters to rush up the ice. Once in position, Walford bounced the puck up the left wing to McKay who beat his man over the blueline and found Wouters in the slot. From point-blank Wouters shot truly, notching his first of the season. He was honoured with 3rd Star Honours post-game.
Having now won two games in a row for the first time this season, the Saskatoon Blades (3-3-0-0) will attempt to make it three in a row against the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings this weekend at 4:00pm on Sunday, October 6th.
Fans will have the chance to meet the players and skate with them on SaskTel Centre's ice for the first Mosaic Family Skate Day of the season. Click here to buy tickets.
